Use two hyphens to indicate a dash–like that. Don’t capitalize the names of the seasons. And don’t capitalize directions (north, south, east, west) unless they mean regions.

YES: That summer, I went east until I arrived at the East Coast.

NO: That Summer, I went East until I arrived at the east coast.

When quoting interior thoughts, use italics, not quotation marks.

YES: Who doesn’t know that? I thought.

NO: “Who doesn’t know that?” I thought.

Also, go easy on interior monologue. Editors view it as a sign of weak writing, and large amounts of italics are not easy to read. While you’re at it, limit rhetorical questions, too (Why had I come here? What was I expecting to find?).
